Hästholmen is part of an untouched network of small lakes and streams, stretching from the cultural area of Högbo to the south, up to the birthplace of prince Daniel of Sweden in Ockelbo to the north.
Hästholmen offers seclusion in the unique setting of the Swedish wilderness, with access to wide forest areas, fishing and much more nearby. On the mainland (5 minutes away by boat), enjoy walks through pine forests, and the free picking of wild berries.
For practical purposes, shopping and groceries are only 15 minutes away. Hästholmen is situated 15 minutes from the city of Gävle and the Gestrike airport, and only 80 minutes from the international airport of Arlanda/Stockholm.
Hästholmen has 2 cottages (one of 60 and one of 20 square meters), a sauna by the waterside, a boathouse, and several sundecks and bathing spots by the water that offer sun from morning to evening.
Hästholmen is the largest private island in the lake (and perhaps in the region) with a single owner, which makes it unique as a property. Here you can find unspoiled peace, silence and contact with yourself and nature. Hästholmen offers more than a 1000 metres of waterfront, with small paths by the water to take a stroll on. Several small sandy "beaches" are in place by nature itself. It also has arranged areas to make the direct contact to the water easy, but without taking away that close-to-nature-feeling. Large parts of the island is typical Swedish nature, with open views, large pine-trees, small rocks and lingon- and blueberries.
The island of Hästholmen offers great outdoor life; for adults as well as for children, for the more restless as well as for the calm, for sunny days as well as for the cloudy ones.
Three sundecks on the waterfront is offered, that follows the sun through the day. From breakfast in the morning, with the toes dipped in the water, to a lazy day with summerlunches above the waves by the largest deck by the boathouse, to the evenings with a drink and sauna in the sunset. Besides offering great opportunity for relaxing, the island also has great opportunities for activities; from fishing or just rowing on the lake, to walking on the path around the island, to picking berries, to chopping that fireplace wood. And small or large projects can always be initiated!
The main cottage (ca 60 sqm) is a log cottage built in the 1960´s with pine trees from the island itself. It has 3 rooms, including a bedroom, a livingspace, and the kitchen. It has been renovated from 2005 and forward, with contemporary design and function, with a fully modern kitchen, and at the same time it still offers the genuine log-cottage feeling. The remaining buildings a functional, simple and offer stunning views and possibilities. The main cottage has electricity. Water for shower, doing dishes and cooking is supplied by simple pump-system directly from the lake. Drinking water is tapped on mainland, and transported in bottles when going to the island. The buildings are in need of new paint within the next few years, and the sauna and the outhouse is in need of small renovations. Total est. cost is 3-5000 euro with own work effort. Local regulations make extension of main cottage with 20 and building a new cottage of ca 25 sqm possible without formal application. Renovation and modernisation of existing buildings is possible within regulations. After formal application a new building of 120 sqm is possible to build on the island.
