Ayvalik is set on an almost completely enclosed bay. One end of this bay faces the Greek Island of Mytilene (you can take a ferry boat there for a day trip) and has a 4 mile long sandy beach (called Sarimsakli). Behind the beach is a well-known beauty spot on top of a hill known locally as the Devils table. The views from here are spectacular. At the opposite end of the bay is Ali Bey Island which is now connected to the mainland by a permanent causeway. Ali Bey is a beautiful spot with empty beaches, ancient hill-top monasteries and a truly charming old Greek town (yes, Greek!). Heading inland from Ayvalik you come to the ruins of Pergamon which is mentioned in the Bible, and further North are the ruins of Troy and the town of Gallipoli. To the South of Ayvalik are the ancient towns of Foca and Yeni Foca. Beyond these are the beautiful seaside town of Cesme and the major city of Izmir (biblical Smyrna). |
